This is (Elisabeth Marus) Lissie's debut studio album. The EP's released by this artist since 2007 have served to toughen her up and round out her sound, which on this work is a cool and graceful country-folk. The blonde hair, big blue eyes, and mid-western simplicity add to the appeal. There is a magnetic honesty about this work. She sings about love, tragedy, youth, self-loathing, religion; and she does so in such a straight forward manner that one can't help but find endearing. The album features a couple songs from past EP's, but they're more polished. The track "Oh Mississippi" is a beautiful, piano-driven ballad that may surprise you with its angelic vocals and inherent radiance. Although this artist is good at making those upbeat, poppy songs, there is definitely also a lot to be said for her more refined and slower tracks, both of which are present on this album. Although it's pretty easy listening, there is still an undeniable depth to this work that is both elegant and satisfying.
