This album is smooth to the ears in the way that a well aged single malt scotch is smooth to the pallet. It is refined, yet intoxicating. It draws you in a little more with each note until you find yourself in an altered state. Reaching number three on the UK music chart has done very little to help The XX gain much notoriety stateside. This is unfortunate, because their debut album has flown under the radar for the most part for the one year plus since its release. The band utilizes two singers throughout the album, one male and one female. Bass guitar is used in a more pronounced way than other bands which contributes to the low haunting groove that builds up on this almost self titled album. The low sound also lends more creedence to the higher electric guitar riffs that cut like a knife through the mellow cool.
